Sally Hope’s Mackenzie Country Landscapes
What inspired me to paint the Mackenzie Country is that I have known that place since I was tiny. My grandmother was an artist on The Grampians Station in the Mackenzie Country, and she designed the Tekapo Church.
We didn't live on The Grampians but we lived nearby and would go there on holidays to visit my grandparents - it is a magical place.
Even though we were brought up on another farm The Grampians is my spiritual home, the views and the spaces are completely amazing.
Granny and Granddad’s house is as it was back when they were alive so all that nostalgia soaks into me and intensifies my feeling for the area.
When I am sitting in the sun porch and I am painting I can see all the way from the gravel driveway, over the lawn out across the paddock right across the plain to Mt John. 27 kilometres of un-interrupted views to Mt John in one direction and Mount Cook in another. Kilometres and kilometres of beauty, the space is extremely extraordinary. The colours are purples pinks oranges and bright yellows. And painting them is all about mixing in purples and then the yellows and oranges leap out at you. With the Landscapes I pick up the paint up and just slice it on – they are very intuitive and special.
I feel passionate about the protection of that environment, which should remain for all to enjoy in all its splendour.
“The Inspiring Lives Project is all about protecting the environment and humanity. There is a perfect synergy between what is important to me and what the Inspiring Lives Project is about. That is why I chose to create The Sally Hope Inspiring Lives Charity Art Exhibition.”
